The Musician’s Advantage reaches university audiences
The Musician’s Advantage is Wesley Ferreira’s keynote exploring how classical music training develops discipline, resilience, creativity, adaptability, and confidence. Presented at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, the talk helps musicians recognize how their training can prepare them for a life of possibility.
Jâca brings Music & Cultural Exchange to Tanzania
In June 2027, Wesley Ferreira's chamber ensemble Jâca will travel to Tanzania for performances, teaching, and cultural exchange in partnership with the Daraja Music Initiative. The residency will also support mpingo tree conservation, connecting music education with the protection of the wood traditionally used to make clarinets.
Jâca embarks on a North American concert tour
Wesley Ferreira will hit the road in the 2025/26 season as part of the dynamic clarinet-guitar duo Jâca. The tour features an impressive 46 live performances spanning 12 U.S. states and 3 Canadian provinces, bringing Jâca’s signature blend of classical, world, and contemporary music to audiences across North America.
Announcing Wesley Ferreira as 2025/26 concerto soloist
Wesley Ferreira has been invited to appear as concerto soloist with the Fort Collins Symphony in their 2025/26 season program Voices of America: A Celebration of Sound and Identity. Ferreira will perform Feiberg’s lively Latin American Chronicles, a work that highlights the diverse energy and cultural richness at the heart of America’s musical spirit.
Wesley Ferreira named featured headliner
Wesley Ferreira has been announced as a featured headliner at ClarinetFest 2025, the International Clarinet Association’s annual conference, held this year in Fort Worth, Texas. He will appear as concerto soloist at the conference’s highlight evening concert, performing with Symphony Orchestra under the direction of maestro David Itkin.

With a charismatic blend of technical flair, polish, and grace, Portuguese-Canadian clarinetist Wesley Ferreira draws in audiences with his unabashed joy and passion for storytelling through music. Widely regarded as a gifted expressionist, critics have praised his “beautiful tone” and “technical prowess” (American Record Guide), “remarkable sensitivity” (CAML Review), and “invigorating performance style” (The Clarinet), noting the vitality and energy he brings to every stage appearance. Fanfare Magazine adds, “Ferreira is clearly a major talent.”
From Europe to Asia, North America to South America, his performances continually engage, prompting the Artistic Director of one recent concert series to describe his performance as “daring, deeply human, and presented with the ease and fluency of a world-class player.” Ferreira leads an active career performing as an international soloist, orchestral and chamber musician, and as an engaging adjudicator and clinician. He has been broadcast nationally on RTP television in Portugal, CBC Radio in Canada, and ABC in Australia and has been a featured guest artist at numerous clarinet festivals.
As one half of the globe-trotting clarinet and guitar duo Jâca, Ferreira is part of an acclaimed ensemble that combines classical and world folk music to bring an adventurous, passionate, and original musical style to the stage. Through extensive touring and educational outreach, Jâca has built a reputation for performances that combine virtuosity with humor, storytelling, and a direct connection with audiences.
Ferreira’s musical voice is deeply informed by his heritage. He grew up in an immigrant family within a tightly-knit Portuguese community in Canada, participating fully in the musical and traditional customs of the diaspora. A third-culture kid (TCK), his entry into music was through the Portuguese bandas filarmónicas tradition. He has since dedicated his career to honoring his roots while forging new artistic paths. His advocacy for Portuguese music continues through performances, recordings, and commissioning projects that bring this rich culture to the global stage.
As a recording artist, Ferreira has released nine albums across labels including Centaur and Parma, earning international recognition such as the 2013 East Coast Music Award for Classical Recording of the Year and the 2015 and 2022 International Portuguese Music Awards. His discography ranges from Into the Green, a bold exploration of works for clarinet and electronics, to Breakthrough, the debut album of Jâca. His 2019 solo album Arrival highlights Portuguese composers and reflects his ongoing commitment to bridging heritage, scholarship, and performance. For Ferreira, the recording studio is not only a space of preservation but also of innovation—a place where he continually redefines the artistic voice of the clarinet. In 2025, Ferreira became a member of the Recording Academy, adding another dimension to a recording career that has remained central to his work as an artist.
Currently based in the United States, he is a tenured full professor of music at Colorado State University, where he maintains a thriving clarinet studio. Known for his imaginative and holistic approach to pedagogy, Ferreira’s teaching philosophy focuses on the whole human being, working to integrate musician–human–artist. His students are mentored to develop self-confidence, an artistic voice, and professional purpose, with many going on to successful careers in performance, teaching, and arts leadership. He is also co-founder and artistic director of the Lift Clarinet Academy, a premier summer training institute that attracts students from around the world and combines intensive performance training with mentorship, empowering the next generation of clarinetists to become confident, expressive, and purposeful artists.
Ferreira has also played an active role in shaping the broader clarinet profession. In 2023, he served as Artistic Director of ClarinetFest® 2023, the International Clarinet Association’s annual conference, leading the organization’s 50th-anniversary celebration and one of the largest gatherings in the conference’s history. Earlier in his career, his interest in instrument design led to an extended collaboration with Selmer Paris, beginning in 2017, as a consultant and development-team member for what became the Muse professional clarinet. Released in 2021, the project represented several years of collaboration between Ferreira, fellow artists, acousticians, and instrument makers.
Ferreira received his musical training at the University of Western Ontario, where he earned his Bachelor of Music while studying with Robert Riseling, and at Arizona State University, where he earned his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees as a student of Robert Spring. Wesley Ferreira is a Buffet Crampon Artist and Vandoren Artist. He performs on Buffet Crampon Légende clarinets, Vandoren V21 reeds and a rose gold M/O ligature.
